5 Ways To Elevate Your Outdoor Space—Without Construction
Creating a beautiful, inviting outdoor space doesn’t always require a major renovation or a large investment. In fact, some of the most impactful changes come from thoughtful additions that introduce atmosphere, comfort, texture, and flexibility without the need for construction.
Whether you have a compact city terrace, a small condo balcony, a backyard patio, or a larger outdoor entertaining space, the right lighting, furniture, accessories, textiles, and greenery can completely change how the space looks, feels, and functions. This is especially true for urban homes, like our Beaches Residence in Toronto, where outdoor spaces often need to balance style, comfort, and functionality within a limited footprint.
At Studio Ha/Wa, we approach outdoor living much like we approach an interior: by considering how each layer works together. Here are five of our favourite ways to elevate your outdoor space, no construction required.
1. Create Atmosphere with Outdoor Lighting
Good outdoor lighting does more than provide practical illumination. It creates atmosphere, adds warmth, and allows your outdoor space to transition effortlessly from day to night.
When choosing outdoor lighting, consider pieces that contribute to the design of the space even when they aren’t switched on. A beautifully designed lantern or portable lamp can act as a decorative object during the day and provide a soft, welcoming glow in the evening.
Portable rechargable LED lamps add flexibility and functionality to an outdoor kitchen.
Rechargeable LED lamps are particularly useful because of their flexibility. They can move between indoor and outdoor spaces and provide functional lighting in areas where hardwiring isn’t possible or practical. For example, in the outdoor kitchen we designed for our Hoefnagels Outdoor Living Project, a portable lamp provided additional task lighting exactly where it was needed, without requiring any electrical work.
Lanterns are another easy way to introduce soft, ambient outdoor lighting. The warm glow of candlelight adds an element of intimacy to an outdoor dining or seating area. In spaces exposed to wind, consider a high-quality battery-operated candle for the same effect without the frustration of a flame that won’t stay lit.

For inspiration, we love the natural simplicity of these teak wood and glass Tribù Lanterns, and the versatility of the Carrie Portable Lamp by Audo at Stylegarage, both of which we used in the backyard design of our Beaches Residence.
2. Introduce Sculptural Accessories
Outdoor spaces are often filled with furniture and planters, but adding a sculptural element can bring a completely different layer of visual interest to the design.
A well-chosen outdoor sculpture or decorative object can create impact without adding maintenance. Larger sculptural pieces can stand beautifully on their own, strategically placed in an empty corner, used to create a focal point, or nestled among foliage where their shape and material provide contrast against the surrounding greenery.
Unlike smaller tabletop accessories that often need to be brought indoors between uses or during bad weather, durable outdoor sculptures can remain in place throughout the season. This makes them particularly useful for creating an outdoor space that feels considered and finished without adding clutter.

For an accessible, budget-friendly option, the Playa Ivory Terrazzo Indoor/Outdoor Balls from CB2 add shape and visual interest. For a more substantial investment, we love the natural stone garden spheres from one of our local Toronto East End favourites, Queen Garden Centre. Their natural texture and larger scale make them particularly effective in generous gardens and landscaped outdoor spaces.
3. Add Softness with Outdoor Throw Pillows
One of the simplest and most affordable ways to refresh an outdoor space is with decorative throw pillows. Much like textiles in an interior, outdoor cushions introduce softness, texture, colour, and comfort while making an outdoor seating area feel more complete and inviting.
In a neutral outdoor space, throw pillows are also an easy opportunity to introduce pattern or colour without committing to a permanent change. A subtle stripe, textured neutral, or carefully chosen accent colour can add personality while still working within the overall exterior colour palette.
The key is restraint. Rather than filling every chair with multiple cushions, consider the furniture arrangement as a whole and use textiles to create balance.
Choosing fade-resistant and water-resistant outdoor fabrics will help protect your cushions from sun exposure and moisture, keeping them looking their best throughout the season. Removable, washable covers are another practical consideration, making it easier to keep outdoor cushions fresh and clean throughout the summer.
This additional layer of comfort helps reinforce the idea of outdoor living—creating spaces that feel less like an extension of the garden and more like a natural continuation of the home.
4. Choose Flexible Outdoor Furniture
Whether you’re working with a small outdoor space or simply want the flexibility to accommodate larger gatherings, furniture that can serve more than one purpose is always a smart addition.
A durable outdoor side table, for example, can also work as an occasional stool when extra seating is needed. Similarly, an outdoor ottoman or pouf can function as a footstool, additional seating, or even a casual coffee table when paired with a tray.
We love the texture and pop of colour this ottoman brings to the space, and the flexibility to use it as extra seating or a table when needed. Photo taken by Studio Ha/Wa at Salone del Mobile.
This type of flexible outdoor furniture is particularly valuable on city terraces, condominium balconies, and smaller patios where every piece needs to earn its place. For urban homes and smaller outdoor spaces like our Beaches Rooftop, choosing versatile furniture can help make a limited footprint more functional without making it feel cluttered or overcrowded. Flexible pieces can also make larger outdoor entertaining areas more adaptable, allowing the layout to change easily depending on how many people are using the space.

Rather than filling an outdoor area with furniture for every possible function, choose fewer, well-considered pieces that can adapt as your needs change. For inspiration, the Nomad Poufs by Tribù offer this kind of versatility, while sculptural outdoor side tables can provide both practical function and visual weight.
5. Layer in Planters and Greenery
Last but certainly not least, every outdoor space—large or small—will benefit from greenery.
When selecting outdoor planters, consider varying their size, height, and shape. Grouping planters together creates a more layered and intentional look than placing individual pots at equal intervals around a space. The same principle applies to the plants themselves: combining different heights, forms, and textures creates depth and visual interest.
Plants and flowers also provide natural colour and texture that balance harder architectural materials such as concrete, stone, brick, metal, and wood. Even in a highly contemporary outdoor space, greenery can soften clean lines and create a more relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. For patios, terraces, and other urban outdoor spaces, layered planting can also create a greater sense of privacy and separation from neighbouring properties.
And if ornamental gardening isn’t your thing, planters can still be both beautiful and useful. For anyone who loves to cook, a collection of pots planted with herbs can create a simple kitchen garden for a patio, balcony, or outdoor kitchen.
For a clean, contemporary look, the Hourglass Planter by Ferm Living at Design Within Reach Canada, pictured above, works beautifully in grouped arrangements and is available in different proportions for a layered effect.
Final Thoughts
Elevating an outdoor space doesn’t always require construction. Often, it is the combination of smaller, thoughtful decisions that makes the greatest difference: a portable lamp that extends an evening outdoors, flexible furniture that adapts when friends arrive, a sculptural object tucked among the greenery, or planters that bring colour and life to a previously empty corner.
The goal is to create an outdoor space that feels considered but comfortable—one that reflects how you want to relax, entertain, and spend time outside this summer.
