Located on the 18th floor of a downtown Toronto office tower, this commercial renovation reimagined a former law firm lunchroom as a refined, multifunctional lounge, kitchen, and dining space. Conceived as a central destination within the workplace, the interior supports daily dining and informal meetings while offering a polished setting for evening events.

The design introduced an open-plan layout organized as a series of distinct yet interconnected zones for dining, lounging, and kitchen use. Influenced by the layered composition of luxury hotel lobbies and lounges, the interior incorporated varied seating arrangements and gathering spaces that invite both conversation and quiet retreat. Clean architectural lines and pronounced structural elements, including wood-clad columns and ceiling beams, established a cohesive visual language throughout, allowing each zone to feel defined while remaining connected to the whole.

At the heart of the space, the kitchen was designed to pair everyday function with the presence of an elegant show kitchen. Integrated appliances, durable commercial-grade finishes, and carefully considered details, including a concealed bar and coffee station, allow the space to transition with ease from daily use to evening entertaining. Custom and locally made furnishings, from banquettes and armchairs to counter stools, introduced flexibility and comfort to the space. A sophisticated palette of warm and cool tones, natural materials, and restrained accents of camel and soft green, echoing the glass of the surrounding office and condominium towers, brought warmth and refinement to the space while maintaining an inviting sense of ease.

The design draws from the language of hotel lounges and residential living rooms rather than corporate typologies. The result is an interior that privileges atmosphere over hierarchy, circulation over rigidity, and material warmth over visual neutrality.

The key material is rift cut white oak, used for the exposed-beam ceiling, the cladding of the architectural columns, and the kitchen cabinets.

“What used to be a very basic staff space has been completely transformed into a modern, welcoming lounge.”

Studio Ha/Wa quickly understood how we wanted the space to function while also elevating the overall look and feel of the office. They approached the project thoughtfully, considering everything from layout and flow to materials and finishes. The result is a polished, highly functional space that feels more like a hospitality environment than a traditional office kitchen.

Throughout the process, Erin was organized, responsive, and extremely detail-oriented. She worked closely with the contractors and ensured the quality of the renovation stayed high from start to finish.
